Reduced Course Load (RCL) Request

International students in F-1 status are required by federal regulations to maintain full-time enrollment. In special circumstances, an F-1 student may be permitted to drop below 12 units. A student who wishes to drop below full-time must obtain written authorization on their Form I-20 from the International Student Program office. To request a RCL authorization, submit this form and attach any required documentation. Dropping below full-time without prior authorization will result in SEVIS termination and loss of F-1 status.

Medical - Documentation from a medical doctor (MD), doctor or osteopathy (OD), or licensed clinical psychologist (PhD/PsyD) is required. RCL up to 0 units allowed for a maximum of 12 months. Academic Difficulty - Initial difficulty with English language or reading requirements (first semester only). Must be enrolled in at least 6 units. Academic Difficulty - Unfamiliarity with U.S. teaching methods. Must be enrolled in at least 6 units. Academic Difficulty - Improper course level placement. Must be enrolled in at least 6 units. Completing Program - May enroll in as few units as required to complete your program of study. Final semester only.

The letter must be written on official letterhead and signed by the medical professional. The letter must indicate the number of units that is recommended (0-12), as well as the term that the recommendation is effective (e.g. Fall 2024). The letter does not need to include a medical diagnosis.
